You Should Have A Dog House

July 27th, 2007 by rosca

Many pet owners deliberate the question of whether or not to have a dog house. Regardless of the type or size of your dog or if it is an outside or inside pet there are practical reasons for providing your pet with a dog house.

Obviously, an outside dog needs a warm, dry house. What size is right for your dog? Use the following guideline to select the right dog house: Roof Height should be 25% to 50% taller than your dog. Door height should be ¾ the shoulder height of your dog. The overall inside dimensions should not be more than 25% longer than your dog in either direction. If your dog will be outside all year round it is best to use an insulated dog house. You can purchase warming mats to help fight the cold. It is essential to insure that the water supply is clean and that it does not freeze. There are many watering devices available to insure a continuous clean water supply. You will also need a non-freeze water container. These stainless steel water containers assure a fresh water supply even in the coldest weather. Hot weather should also be a concern and there are cooling mats available that you should consider.

If your dog is outside occasionally it is also wise to have a safe secure place for it to go. A dog house provides for a place to keep water clean. It is also a place of security for your pet. It will provide a dry place out of the rain. A dog house also alerts strangers that there is a dog present on your property.

Inside dogs like the same security that outside pets require.. Pets need a place of their own that is their own private location, inside the larger domain of your home. Many pet owners are providing a light, sometimes collapsible, inside dog house for their pet. The light weight and collapsible dog house can be taken on trips as well. Some pet owners will use a travel carrier in place of an inside dog house. That option is alright as long as you provide a comfortable mat and it of a size that is comfortable for your pet.

Whether you dog is an inside or outside animal, you should consider providing a dog house for your pet. Be sure to take advantage of the many valuable sites available that discuss the safety and security of your pet and the need for a secure dog house.

Dog Clothes

July 25th, 2007 by rosca

Your dog is not just a pet. Your dog is not just an animal. Your dog is a bona FIDO member of the family!! So of course your dog needs to dress the part – right?

Well thanks to the internet and the many online boutiques you can dress your dog for every occasion from the comfort of your own home. No more “granny’ knitted sweaters for your sophisticated canine!! But is dressing up your dog just something that you like to do? Is there any benefit to your dog? It all depends on why you bought the dog clothes!!

A Dog clothes can be a very useful item of clothing for your dog. It can keep him warm in the cold weather, dry in the wet weather and can protect him from infections in the same way that our clothes protect us. It can also keep him clean which may be especially useful after a romp in the park on a wet winter’s day. Just take the clothes off after it’s dirty and keep most of the dirt contained. Then you can let your clean(ish) dog into the car which helps keep the car cleaner. Dog clothes come in many different styles and colors so pick the clothes that’s most appropriate for its use. And of course what dog would be seen out without the matching doggie hat??

Just like people wear, you can get ‘designer’ labels for your dog to make him feel like a million dollars, (and it probably costs that too). Many celebrities always have their dogs dressed in the latest doggie fashion. A practice that Paris Hilton with Tinkerbell has raised to an art form, or so it seems!

Apart from coats and sweaters other useful dog clothing items include dog t-shirts and dog sunglasses. These can look cute but they do also serve to help protect your pet. The sunglasses can protect him from UVA and UVB rays and the t-shirt helps protect his skin. Dogs can develop skin cancer the same way that people can and this is one of the main cancers in dogs. And you thought it was just to make Fido look cute!!

As you can see, getting clothing for your dog is not just vanity on your part, although it is fun dressing up your dog. It can also play a vital role in keeping your dog healthy and happy. And if you do get the urge to step out on the wild side – get your dog some formal wear or a great costume for Halloween – go on have fun and buy your dog some great dog clothes today!!

Small dogs

July 20th, 2007 by rosca

There are many different types of small dogs, each having their own unique characteristics and traits. Each dog, of course, is a unique individual, but generally most dogs of a given breed have more similarities than dissimilarities of behavior and personality. Although small dog breeds are often thought of as highly strung and yappy, this needn’t be true at all as long as the dog is cared for correctly, given lots of love and attention, as well as good socialization and training. Small dogs may perhaps not adjust as well to boisterous children and toddlers, but they can do very well with older children and families. Generally, small dog breeds are just ten inches or less high at the shoulder. In most breeds, the male is slightly larger than the female, but the difference is generally small.

It’s extremely easy to love small dogs, and one of their great advantages is that they don’t take up too much room. But there are other, numerous reasons why a small dog is one of the best types of dog you can have in your life. No matter who you are, there is a type of pet that is small enough to fit easily into your life, but with a heart big enough to fill your days with joy. If you’re thinking about getting a new pet, consider any of the small breeds of dogs that you can hold easily and enjoy to the full.

If necessary, a small animal can easily be carried from place to place, and, of course, they are easier to fit in the home as well. When you take your small dog out for a walk you don’t have to be afraid all of the time that he’s going to pull you over. If you have to travel, a small dog is easier to get in and out of the car, and at night he can snuggle into smaller spaces and still be wonderfully comfortable. All this means, of course, that small dogs are ideal for homes that are smaller and more compact in nature, but they are also perfect for those people with larger homes who don’t want to fill all the space up with animals. And when you consider the very wide range of different small dog breeds to choose from - terriers, spaniels, chihuahuas, pomeranians, pugs, dachshunds, etc., etc. - it seems impossible not to find one that is just right for your needs and preferences.

There are many other small dog breeds available so you need to know exactly what you’re looking for. You need to make sure that any new dog - whether a small dog or not - fits in with your family, your living space and your lifestyle. Before making a final decision on the breed you want, make sure that you do some thorough research and talk to at least a couple of breeders to find just the right match for you and your family.

Dog training

July 19th, 2007 by rosca

When training your dog it’s important to always remain patient and level headed. Remember your dog is a dog! He doesn’t understand things the same way that you do. He will not understand if you yell instructions at him. He will only become scared of you if you do this. This is not a good way for him to learn.

Dogs are very habitual. Their lives revolve around ritual and their internal body clock and routine. They anticipate your return from work at a certain time. They expect their meals at a certain time.

You can use this information in your dog training. This sort of habitual behavior is part of why dog’s are easy animals to train (compared to other animals.) Of course the goal of dog obedience training is for the dog to respond with a particular reaction to a particular command.

Because of the habitual nature of dogs it’s important that you be extremely consistent in your training. Do not change things up on your dog! This will only confuse him. You should go through your routines with him the exact same way every time. When you tell your dog to sit you need to make sure that he does in fact sit before going on to the next command. This consistency will help your dog training efforts be more effective.

Perhaps the most important point with dog training is to keep a level head. You cannot allow yourself to let your temper flare or to yell at or hit your dog. Not only for the obvious moral reasons that you wouldn’t want to treat your dog in this way but also because this sort of behavior will make it much more difficult to train your dog.

Your dog doesn’t know how to learn from this sort of behavior. Your dog will only become afraid of you and it will make it harder to train him in the future.

Another important point of dog training is to make sure you reward your dog for a good behavior or for doing a trick in the correct way. This is important because it helps build your relationship with your dog and lets them know that you like their good behavior. Like with all aspects of dog training you need to be consistent with rewarding your dog.

Of course this does not mean to give your dog a food treat every time they do something right because that would not be good for them and would also become very expensive. You don’t need to give your dog the same treat every time just some sort of treat whether it’s letting them play with their favorite toy, giving them a friendly pat on the head with encouraging words in a friendly voice, or giving them a food treat.

World’s Ugliest Dog Contest

July 15th, 2007 by rosca

ugliest dogThis is Elwood, a 2-year-old Chinese Crested and Chihuahua mix, was crowned as the world’s ugliest dog here Friday, a distinction that delighted the New Jersey mutt’s owners.

Elwood, dark colored and hairless — save for a mohawk-like puff of white fur on his head — is often referred to as “Yoda,” or “ET,” for his resemblance to those famous science fiction characters.

“I think he’s the cutest thing that ever lived,” said Elwood’s owner, Karen Quigley, a resident of Sewell, New Jersey.
Quigley brought Elwood out to compete for the second year at the annual ugly dog contest at the Marin-Sonoma County Fair. Elwood placed second last year.

Most of the competing canines were also Chinese Crested, a breed that features a mohawk, bug eyes and a long, wagging tongue.

Quigley said she rescued Elwood two years ago. “The breeder was going to euthanize him because she thought he was too ugly to sell,” said Quigley.

“So ha ha, now Elwood’s all over the Internet and people love him and adore him.”

Beyond the regal title of ugliest dog, Elwood also earned a $1,000 reward for his owner.
